Couples Therapy
Our primary relationships are integral to our well-being, and yet often are neglected. We seldom learn that “…love is a skill, not just an enthusiasm” (de Botton, The Course of Love). Couples therapy can help you learn the best way to love and be with your partner. Therapy can be beneficial at any stage, whether you are working out a kink in a new relationship, seeking a “tune up,” desperately trying to make it work, deciding whether it even can work, or want to part with grace and move forward as effective co-parents.
It is shame that much couples’ therapy can devolve into rehashing past transgressions. I am committed to evidence-based approaches to couples’ relationships that focus on a balance of acceptance/change, expectation setting, skill building, and enhancement.
I offer the following:
Integrated Behavioral Couples’ Therapy (IBCT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for Couples
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for Couples
Family Therapy
While parents are always involved in a child’s treatment, sometimes a broader family focus is helpful.
Examples of family therapy goals:
improve communication
develop effective structure/routine
promote perspective/understanding
foster positive relationships
increase functional independence/accountability
resolve conflict
establish better boundaries
“There are lots of different ways to make a family. It just takes love” (Parr, We Belong Together).
Areas of interest and proficiency include:
Multicultural/multiracial families
Adoptive families
Divorcing/co-parenting/blending families
Gender non-conforming families
